!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! They said it is pretty good, I believe "GLI light" was the phrase. But am I the only one bothered by the lack of a 6th forward gear? It's not like they don't have the components lying around. C'mon VW this isn't 1998!

It's not a performance car, it doesn't need a sixth gear. It keeps the price down.

Neither is the Dodge Dart and Mazda3 both have 6 cogs.

That makes no sense.
6 gears is not for performance, its for fuel efficiency in cars like this. 5 forward gears and one massive overdrive 6th for maximum fuel.

You can just set the gear ratio of the 5th gear to what you want your overdrive to be. It doesn't need 6 gears and close gear ratios whatever, it's an economy car.

So what? Having only 5 gears makes it cheaper, which is probably what VW was going for.

I didn't say close ratio gears.
6th gear will run lower RPMs when cruising than a 5 gear unit that has mangled gears just to make it work. You are compromising when using 5 gears to cover both acceleration purposes in the city and you run the engine several hundreds of RPMs higher when cruising.
If they were smart they'd shove in 8 speed or 9 spped ZF autos if not go to CVTs entirely.
Using a 5 speed anything in this day is just lazy and cheap.

Isn't the next 200 getting a 9 speed ZF?
Imprezas are CVTs now too, aren't they?
5 speeds in auto or manual in this day is just cheap and lazy and unforgivable.

You know what... Now that I think about it, I am glad they went with only 5. You see the next gen Sportwagen is now at the top of my list for my next car. It will be avail with the 1.8T and the TDI both are tempting propositions (whereas now the TDI is the only way to go). So VW has made my life easier, TDI it is!

The 1.8T lacks torque down low. A true sooper overdrive 6th wouldn't be very useful...

And that answer I will accept, thank you.

See everyone wins! TDI was the correct choice from the start but I really don't see how a sixth gear is going to affect you on a day to day basis anyways.
